Ocean Wonders: Sharks! We took the girls to the New York Aquarium the other day to check out the new shark exhibit and had such a blast. The sharks are really cool, and there's even a little tunnel kids can crawl through to get right up into the shark tank (P1 was fearless). We also caught the sea lion show - sure, the trainers' patter during the show is a little corny, but they really sell it and the show has great energy and is a lot of fun (so much so, we forgot we were sitting in basically 100% humidity and really enjoyed it). Also caught plenty of penguins, a sea otter, lots of fish and some sea turtles, then headed down to the boardwalk from some lunch and a quick peek at the ocean before hopping back on the subway to come home. Bonus: right now, through September 3, tickets are half off!
New York Public Library Culture Pass: This is so cool. Right now, NYPL cardholders can "borrow" passes to get into a bunch of different cultural institutions throughout the city - everything from The Noguchi Museum (it's been on my wishlist for awhile now), to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum (would be so fun with bigger kids), to the stunningly gorgeous Wave Hill. If the weather holds up, I think we're going to use ours to take the kids to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, a family favorite.
Package Free Shop: We do our best to recycle around here, but amid news stories about how much of our recycling might be ending up in landfills anyway (see here), I've been wondering what else we can do to cut down on our carbon footprint. Enter, the Package Free Shop! They sell a variety of household products, from razors to household cleaners to food containers, and make sure to do so with no extraneous packaging. So, for instance, they reuse the boxes that they receive their inventory in to ship products back out to customers, and rely a lot on compostable and reusable materials. I've got my eye on these vegan lip balms (how cute is that packaging?), a stainless steel foldable spork (perfect for on-the-go lunches or stashing in the office), and this awesome tote bag, and I'm hoping these organic cotton hair ties come back in stock soon.
