It was a lovely weekend, Dear Reader. Quiet and peaceful and even when it was quite gray the light somehow managed to filter down and make everything look beautiful and serene.
And because Monday was a court holiday, it was a three day weekend (contributing to my positive feelings about it, no doubt). The Toast and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver both had very funny takedowns of the day, but I'll take my extra day off no problem. (Side note: John Oliver's show is very funny and smart, and I've been rather enjoying it).
The weekend kicked off Friday night with dinner at Boca Lupo, a little Italian restaurant in Cobble Hill that is very charming and always delicious.
Saturday morning after a lazy start was devoted to running errands, which included a stop at the Farmers Market. The last of the summer's tomatoes were still haunting the stands, but otherwise autumn's bounty was in full force.
Lunch was at Ganso, a nearby ramen spot that is always crowded and very delicious (and which will always make me think of Jocelyn and Sandeep, friends who used to live around the corner from Ganso and abandoned us for California).
We picked up some ground turkey at the farmers' market, so after we got home, J made meatballs (he uses the recipe from Frankie's 457 and it is perfect; he just substituted turkey for the beef). Because meatballs require sauce, he also made his excellent tomato sauce (also from Frankie's). And then, because it was the start of a three day weekend with glorious time stretching out in front of us - because the weather was cool outside and filling a kitchen with things that simmer and bubble and bake (and the smells!) is just too good - because why not?? J also made eggplant parm.
Not the most beautiful picture, but I was hungry, ok? And holy smokes, was it good. Di came over and ate with us and we watched Moonrise Kingdom and I made these brownies for dessert (because you always need dessert and because these brownies are perfect and amazing and I also add a shake of cinnamon because why not).
J was hogging the square casserole dish for the eggplant parm (not complaining!) so I baked the brownies in a pie dish and they were still good.
Sunday was for rock climbing at Brooklyn Boulders with some of my sporting-est friends, and great fun was had by all (including during post-climb drinks at Mission Dolores, with take-out barbecue from Dinosaur BBQ down the street. I highly recommend both establishments: our food was damn tasty and the bar - friendly bartender, outdoor space, tons of dogs - what's not to love?).
Monday - more chores, lots of watching Gilmore Girls (it's all up on Netflix! And what are days off for if not binge-watching?), we finally put together the shelving unit for the bathroom (it looks great! I'm so happy. And it's made of bamboo, a sustainable resource), and I roasted the orange cauliflower we got at the farmers market.
Salt, pepper, olive oil, chili flakes, and some garlic cloves in a hot oven for about forty minutes.
And that was that! How was your weekend?
